Job Description

About the Thompson-Nicola Regional District

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is located in south-central British Columbia, with dozens rural and urban communities spread across 44,300 square kilometres. The TNRD provides more than 120 local government services to approximately 144,000 people in 10 Electoral Areas, 11 member municipalities, and 25 First Nations.

The TNRD is headquartered in the City of Kamloops, the largest community within the regional district. The Thompson-Nicola region has a vast range of climates that experience true four-season weather, with plenty of year-round sunshine, little rain, and warm summers. Residents generally have short commutes, easy access to recreation and the outdoors, and a high quality of life. The TNRD acknowledges that we are located within the unceded, ancestral lands of the Nlaka’pumux, Secwépemc, St’at’imc, and Syilx Nations.

 

Our Library System

The Merritt Library is seeking Casual staff for Library Assistant and Library Page shifts who will create a welcoming environment and a superb library experience for all. This position will help patrons of all ages and abilities find answers to their reference and readers' advisory questions, and provide support in using electronic devices. You will also assist in the planning and delivery of programs and events, register new patrons, check materials in/out, and perform cash transactions. There is also a physical component to this position.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications include:

  • Minimum two-year Diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution;
  • Strong customer service skills and experience;
  • Experience working with children in a professional capacity;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office, social media and mobile devices;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and diffuse difficult patron situations;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and personal/professional development;
  • Ability to lift 20-25 lbs.; and,
  • Valid BC Driver's License.

Qualifications that will be considered an asset include:

  • Experience assisting with the design and delivery of programs and events;
  • Parent Child Mother Goose training and Food Safe certificates;
  • A genuine interest in working with patrons of all ages;
  • A passion for helping others and a belief in the importance of literacy;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team-based environment;
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills;
  • Strong problem-solving skills;
  • Knowledge of TNRL programs and services;
  • Coursework related to libraries and information services.

 

Availability

This casual position will include shifts for both Library Assistants and Pages. Work will be scheduled in advance and on short notice, and include variety of shifts including daytime, evenings and weekends. 

 

Pay

  • Library Page pay rate is $19.70 per hour (Grid Level 3)
  • Library Assistant pay rate is $27.60 per hour (Grid Level 9)  

In addition, casual employees are paid a percentage in lieu of benefits.
