Job Description

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is located in south-central British Columbia, with dozens rural and urban communities spread across 44,300 square kilometres. The TNRD provides more than 120 local government services to approximately 144,000 people in 10 Electoral Areas, 11 member municipalities, and 25 First Nations.

The TNRD is headquartered in the City of Kamloops, the largest community within the regional district. The Thompson-Nicola region has a vast range of climates that experience true four-season weather, with plenty of year-round sunshine, little rain, and warm summers. Residents generally have short commutes, easy access to recreation and the outdoors, and a high quality of life. The TNRD acknowledges that we are located within the unceded, ancestral lands of the Nlaka’pumux, Secwépemc, St’at’imc, and Syilx Nations.

Reporting to the Manager of Finance, the Accounting Technician I position involves a variety of accounting, clerical, and data entry tasks related to processing and reconciling accounts payable and receivable transactions. Responsibilities include preparing batches for processing, key entry, online editing, and maintaining accurate filing of source documents. The role follows established procedures and requires sound judgment in resolving routine issues and reconciling accounts. Complex or unusual matters are referred to a supervisor for review. Other specific duties include: 

  • Insuring invoices and requisitions for goods and services comply with financial policies and procedures
  • Preparing and entering batches of invoices for data entry in a timely and accurate manner
  • Completing cheque and electronic file transfer (EFT) runs 
  • Reconciling electronic fund deposits
  • Review, analyze and email system generated reports to ensure accuracy
  • Balance cash floats and petty cash
  • Monthly reconciliation of internal office charges and eco card administration
Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a two-year accounting program with one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and software applicable to basic accounting, Microsoft word and excel, and Adobe PDF pro.
  • Working knowledge of record keeping methods
  • Ability to work effectively on your own and within a team environment
  • Ability to use confidential oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to verify data and run reports in a paperless environment
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to display significant detail and accuracy with data
  • Ability to provide helpful and courteous client service
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles and practices

This position falls under the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 900.  The placement of the Accounting Technician 1 is at Pay Grade 3, which is $30.49 to $35.01 per hour. Non-benefitted staff receive a 14% additional, in lieu of benefits.
